Elizabeth (Eleanor) Grey was born in 1393 – the second child (and eldest daughter) of Reginald Grey, the third Baron Grey of Ruthin, and his first wife, Margaret Ros.

In 1409, at the age of sixteen, she was married to Robert, Baron Poynings. It was a marriage which was to produce 2 sons – Robert and Richard.

Elizabeth did not follow her family’s loyalties and dreamed of a more simple life free from her familial responsibilities. Her attempts to escape her family’s hold on her often led her to assume a more simple identity under the guise of Eleanor Grey – a practice of which her husband took a dim view.

When Robert died in 1433, Elizabeth defied her father to marry the love of her life – George Brown, a commoner – in 1434. A childless but none the less happy marriage which ended when Elizabeth died in 1478 at the amazing age of 85.
